Oswaldo Alanis during the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Oswaldo Alanis' contract issues remains an issue for Chivas heading into the Clausura.

The new year brings a new season in Liga MX, with Puebla and reigning champion Tigres kicking off the 2018 Clausura on Friday.

Here are five themes to keep track of in the months to follow.

1. Club America, Chivas to bounce back?

Club America and Chivas had very different 2017 Apertura tournaments but the uniting factor was the disappointment with which Mexico's two giants ended their respective campaigns.

Chivas went in as reigning champion and stalled en route to a 13th place regular-season...

Liga MX season-in-a-sentence reviews for every team

Tigres celebrate their 2017 Apertura title win over Monterrey.
It was another great season for Tigres, who have won the Apertura three seasons in a row.

Thanks to a competition format that schedules two tournaments per year, Liga MX seasons can at times feel like a whirlwind. With two playoff runs and two ensuing champions in less than 12 months, the scheduling might seem chaotic, but it's what truly makes the Mexican first division so thrilling to follow.

In the spirit of that brevity, we've decided to provide a one-sentence season review for each Liga MX team. If you didn't get a chance to keep up with the rapid pace of the league, here's what...

Arrest of Lobos' Jonathan Fabbro ordered in sexual assault case

An Argentine judge has ordered the arrest of Paraguay midfielder Jonathan Fabbro in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an underage girl.

The 35-year-old Fabbro, who was born in Argentina, plays for Liga MX club Lobos BUAP, which said it was suspending his contract so he could attend to his legal matters.

The victim's attorney told The Associated Press that the arrest order was issued because of descriptions of the incident by the victim and members of her family in April.

If found guilty,...

Liga MX: Marquez allegations, Lobos among biggest surprises

Drug trafficking allegations against Mexico captain Rafa Marquez sent shock waves through Liga MX.

As we approach the final weekend of Liga MX's Apertura 2017, we asked correspondents Tom Marshall, Nayib Moran and Eric Gomez to reflect on the biggest surprises from a wild season in Mexico. These were their answers:

Tom Marshall

There have been an array of shocks and surprises during the 2017 Apertura, but nothing comes close to the moment the news broke on Aug. 9 about Rafa Marquez being sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for an alleged link, which he denies, to a drug trafficking...

Lobos' Amaury Escoto scores early Puskas Award contender for 2018

Amaury Escoto may have scored the goal of the year with this bicycle kick from long-range.

The Puskas Award shortlist for 2017 may have only been revealed last week, but Lobos midfielder Amaury Escoto has already filed a very strong contender for 2018.

With the scoreline locked at 1-1 going into the latter stages, Escoto popped up with an 85th-minute winner for Lobos over Chivas Guadalajara.

It's perhaps also worth mentioning that the goal just so happened to be an insanely spectacular, acrobatic overhead kick from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Wow.

Lobos coach Rafael Puente is so adamant...
