Penalty specialist Simon Mignolet's eight spot kick saves for Liverpool

Simon Mignolet continued his excellent habit of saving penalties for Liverpool, denying Jamie Vardy in the Reds' 3-2 win at Leicester last Saturday.

The Belgian has saved eight penalties as a Liverpool player -- here's a look back at them:

1. Stoke City -- Jonathan Walters -- Aug. 17, 2013

On his Liverpool debut after moving from Sunderland, Mignolet made the best possible first impression, denying Walters in the 88th minute to secure a 1-0 win. He got down to his right to save Walters' powerful effort and then quickly got up to block Kenwyne Jones' follow-up before being mobbed by his Liverpool teammates. "It was the debut that you dream of," Mignolet said after the game. "I had hoped to do something like that, but you never really think you will."

2. Manchester United -- Wayne Rooney -- March 22, 2015

It would take 19 months for Mignolet to save another penalty, and this one had much less significance. Liverpool were 2-1 down against their arch-rivals when Emre Can fouled Daley Blind in the area in injury time. Rooney looked to see off a 10-man Liverpool, but his effort was at a comfortable height to Mignolet's right. Rooney later tweeted that he should have let Juan Mata, on a hat trick, take the penalty.

3. Crystal Palace -- Glenn Murray -- May 16, 2015

Another one of Mignolet's saves lost amid a Liverpool defeat. In Steven Gerrard's farewell match at Anfield, substitute Murray stepped up late on and saw Mignolet reach low down to his right. However, the rebound fell kindly to Murray, allowing him to slot home. Despite the outcome, it goes down as a save on Mignolet's record.

4. Southampton -- Sadio Mane -- March 20, 2016

Just after half time and with Liverpool 2-0 up, Southampton's Mane was denied by Mignolet from 12 yards out. Again, he dived to his right and palmed the ball away from danger. Manager Jurgen Klopp was visibly delighted with save, but it would just be short-term happiness. Mane, a future Liverpool player, would have the last laugh and put two second half goals past Mignolet to complete a dramatic 3-2 turnaround.

5. Arsenal -- Theo Walcott -- Aug. 14, 2016

Mignolet set a Liverpool record for penalty saves in the Premier League era when he denied Walcott at the Emirates, passing David James' four. Walcott went to Mignolet's right and the shot stopper was at full stretch to get two gloves on the strike to keep the scoreline at 0-0. Mignolet said: "We had studied where Arsenal players put their penalties but it was difficult because their normal penalty takers weren't on the pitch. It happened to be Walcott and luckily I picked the right spot."

Sadio Mane, then at Southampton, was denied from the spot by future teammate Simon Mignolet last year.

6. Chelsea -- Diego Costa -- Jan. 31, 2017

Liverpool were able to earn a point against the eventual Premier League champions as Mignolet made up for an earlier mishap. He was caught napping when lining up a free kick, with David Luiz capitalising and putting Chelsea into the lead. Georginio Wijnaldum levelled in the second half before Mignolet denied Costa late on, getting low down to his right to stop the striker's effort.

A few days after the game, Mignolet explained his approach to saving spot-kicks. "First of all, you have to know and pick the right angle, then the timing has to be right, and then you're a bit dependent on how the penalty has actually been taken. In the end, it's a bit of luck to keep it out."

7. Hoffenheim -- Andrej Kramaric -- Aug. 15, 2017

In the first leg of a crucial Champions League playoff, Mignolet saved a penalty early on that put Liverpool on their way to an important 2-1 victory. In truth, Kramaric's effort was poor and Mignolet stayed central right up until the strike, then diving slightly left.

Klopp credited Liverpool's goalkeeping coach for advising Mignolet to stay in the middle of the goal. "Simon, together with John Achterberg, did a really good job," the Reds boss said. "It was a decisive moment."

8. Leicester City -- Jamie Vardy -- Sep. 23, 2017

Mignolet's most recent heroics saw him atone for an error he made seconds before. Although he disputes the referee's decision, the goalkeeper botched a clearance and brought down Vardy in the penalty area. Vardy dusted himself off to take the penalty, but smashed his effort down the middle, slightly to Mignolet's right side.

"I knew to stay up right," the Belgium international said. "It was well struck, he went for a lot of power. He has scored two like that recently. Luckily, I was able to get two hands behind it."
