Hellas Verona have signed Mexican defender Rafael Marquez, bringing him back to European football from Mexican side Club Leon.

Rafa Marquez joining Hellas Verona

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol reacts to the news of Rafael Marquez's transfer to Hellas Verona.

Mexico captain Rafa Marquez is off to Italy to join Hellas Verona, his former club Leon confirmed on Monday.

Italian media reports the 35-year-old defender has penned a one-year deal at Verona, with a second-year option.

In his first year playing in Mexico since 1999, Marquez helped Leon win back-to-back Liga MX titles in December and May.

He then guided Mexico to the World Cup knockout stage, even scoring against Croatia.

World Cup fever is just wearing off, but a new season is already upon us in Mexico this weekend, with the Liga MX Apertura 2014 kicking off Friday.

There has been plenty of transfer movement ahead of the new season, but the side out in front is still bicampeón Leon, who will be aiming for a historic third consecutive championship.
