Bayer Leverkusen's Hakan Calhanoglu to serve four-month ban from FIFA

Gab Marcotti and Alexis Nunes break down the great business done by Leverkusen to sign Leon Bailey.
Hakan Calhanoglu will miss the rest of the season for Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will serve a four-month ban imposed by FIFA for breach of contract.

The 22-year-old Turkey international must also pay €100,000 in compensation to Turkish club Trabzonspor, for whom he agreed to sign as a teenager, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled on Thursday.

Calhanoglu was a youth player at Karlsruher when he was paid €100,000 after agreeing to sign for Trabzonspor in the future. But he never joined the club, instead extending his...

Hamburg hail Bundesliga survival act after defeating Karlsruher

Hamburg celebrated avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga into the early hours of Tuesday morning, while Karlsruher "felt like somebody had torn their heart out" following the 2-1 playoff defeat.

Ninety-one minutes into the second leg of the promotion/relegation playoff on Monday, Hamburg looked set to be relegated from the Bundesliga after 52 years in the division.

They had fallen behind to a 78th-minute goal by Reinhold Yabo, but Marcelo Diaz then converted a free-kick deep into injury time --...

Hamburg saved their Bundesliga status in the most dramatic fashion with a 2-1 win at Karlsruher in the promotion/relegation playoff on Monday night,

Hamburg remained the only founding member of the Bundesliga never to be relegated since the league's start in 1963, after also winning the playoff last season on away goals against Greuther Fuerth to stay up.

Reinhold Yabo gave Karlsruher a 1-0 lead on the night and a 2-1 aggregate lead with his goal just over 10 minutes from time, but there was a sting...

Rafael van der Vaart set for Hamburg swansong in crucial playoff clash

Rafael van der Vaart is set to make his final start for Hamburg in the second leg of the Bundesliga relegation/promotion playoff against Karlsruher on Monday.

With the tie poised at 1-1 heading in to the crucial match at the Wildparkstadion, Bruno Labbadia's Hamburg must score in order to avoid being relegated to the second tier on the away goals rule.

Hamburg's injury and suspension problems mean 32-year-old Van der Vaart -- who will be leaving the club this summer whether or not they survive in...
