Hamburg remained the only founding member of the Bundesliga never to be relegated since the league's start in 1963, after also winning the playoff last season on away goals against Greuther Fuerth to stay up.

Rafael van der Vaart set for Hamburg swansong in crucial playoff clash

Hamburg players salute their fans after beating Schalke, but Stuttgart's victory over Paderborn has them in the relegation play-off spot and will have to continue fighting to avoid dropping to the second division for the first time in their history.

Rafael van der Vaart is set to make his final start for Hamburg in the second leg of the Bundesliga relegation/promotion playoff against Karlsruher on Monday.

With the tie poised at 1-1 heading in to the crucial match at the Wildparkstadion, Bruno Labbadia's Hamburg must score in order to avoid being relegated to the second tier on the away goals rule.

Hamburg's injury and suspension problems mean 32-year-old Van der Vaart -- who will be leaving the club this summer whether or not they survive in...

Hamburg's Bundesliga future is still in the balance after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Karlsruher in the first leg of their relegation/promotion play-off game at the HSV Arena.

Former Hamburg youth player Rouwen Hennings gave the second division side the lead, but an Ivo Ilicevic strike 17 minutes from time brought the hosts back level in the tie, which will be completed at the Wildparkstadion on Monday.

Hamburg will have to score there to stand any chance of maintaining their unblemished 52-year...
