Akwa United close the gap on league leaders

Michael Ibe's 76th-minute strike for 10-man Akwa United sealed a 1-0 away victory against Yobe Desert Stars on a weekend in which league leaders Lobi Stars were defeated.

Akwa, who had to deal with Ayobami Asekunowo's first-half dismissal, are just two points behind Stars, who became the latest heavyweight casualty to stumble in Omoku as they lost 1-0 to Go Round at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium. Shedrack Oghali headed in Akinwale Ogunjobi's 69th-minute cross for the winner.

Go Round, who remain unbeaten...

Lokosa's goalscoring heroics must pique Rohr's interest

There is still just under half a season of football to go, but Kano Pillars striker Junior Lokosa has already helped himself to a first-time record.

The 24-year-old's brace against Heartland made him the first player in Nigerian top-flight league history to score 16 goals by the halfway point.

To put that number in perspective, Ishaya Jatau, who held the Nigerian league scoring record for 19 years, did so with a 17-goal haul in 1990.

Over the last nine years, the league's scoring record has come...

Three NPFL Talking Points

Death, taxes and Junior Lokosa breaking a mini-drought. Kano Pillars' near unstoppable hitman found himself caged last weekend, but returned with a vengeance this week.

In Aba, Fatau Dauda was restored to the Enyimba line-up and 'rewarded' his coach by getting sent off for violent conduct.

Those two and other juicy bits from last weekend in the Nigeria Professional Football League ...

Last weekend, flaming hot league leading scorer Junior Lokosa saw himself smothered...

NPFL Observations: Ezenwa, Orji and violence

We have quickly hurtled to the midway point of the Nigeria Professional Football League, and Lobi Stars are setting a pace as breathless as the speed with which the competition is racing to what should be a record finish.

This past matchday was no different as the action continued all the way to Monday evening, highlighted by the smothering of league top scorer Junior Looks for another week, and pockets of undesirable assault at one venue.

Here is what we took from the weekend that was...

Ezenwa...

Saka extends Lobi's lead as Oriental Derby ends goalless

Ayo Saka struck a late winner to extend Lobi Stars' lead to six points, while the ninth Oriental Derby of the season failed to ignite and ended in a goalless affair.

Saka was the match-winner for Stars; the veteran midfielder's 81st-minute effort earning the leaders a 1-0 victory against 10-men Kano Pillars.

Chris Madaki was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence and, within a minute, his dismissal had dire consequences as Saka headed home Ebube Duru's cross.

It was fourth time...
