While Kaizer Chiefs have been a major player in domestic football, the South African giants have failed to make an impact in continental competition.

Kaizer Chiefs might be South Africa's most popular and successful club, but their record in continental club competition is in stark contrast to the reach and profitability of their brand.

Over the last four decades, Chiefs have won more league titles and cup trophies than any other South African team, and were also victors in the now-defunct African Cup Winners' Cup 15 years ago.

But their CAF Champions League record is poor, as they have never qualified for the group phase, making them an underachiever...

Former South Africa international John 'Shoes' Moshoeu dies

John Moshoeu was nicknamed 'Shoes' for his dribbling ability.

JOHANNESBURG -- The South African Football Association says former international midfielder and African Cup of Nations winner John Moshoeu has died. He was 49.

Moshoeu's agent also announced his death, saying he died in a Johannesburg hospital on Tuesday after "a long but brave battle" with cancer.

Nicknamed "Shoes" because of his dribbling ability, Moshoeu scored four goals for South Africa in its victorious 1996 African Cup campaign. He was also part of the 1998 World Cup squad and played 73 times...

Orlando Pirates-Kaiser Chiefs derby off following Senzo Meyiwa death

The South African Premier Soccer League has postponed this weekend's derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaiser Chiefs following the death of Pirates goalkeeper and South Africa captain Senzo Meyiwa.

The 27-year-old was fatally shot at his girlfriend's house during an attempted robbery Sunday night as he tried to apprehend the intruders, police and an eyewitness said.

Meyiwa was killed around 8 p.m. after two gunmen entered a house in Vosloorus township near Johannesburg while an accomplice of theirs...
