Paulinho gives Guangzhou Evergrande edge as Muang Thong lose in ACL

A second-half strike from Paulinho gave Chinese powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande a first leg 1-0 win over Kashima Antlers of Japan in a Round of 16 2017 AFC Champions League tie on Tuesday night.

The victory puts the two-time champions within sight of the last eight, keeping them on course to add to the title won in 2013 and 2015.

Ricardo Goulart powers Guangzhou Evergrande from ACL group

Guangzhou Evergrande squeezed into the knockout stage of the 2017 AFC Champions League with a 2-2 draw against Suwon Bluewings at Tianhe Stadium on Tuesday evening, thanks to a controversial goal from Brazilian forward Ricardo Goulart.

The Chinese Super League big-spenders, who were continental champions in 2013 and 2015, avoided last season's ignominious first-round exit to finish second in Group G.

A Brazilian-inspired Guangzhou Evergrande went to the top of Group G of the 2017 AFC Champions League (ACL) on Tuesday with a 6-0 win over Eastern SC of Hong Kong that saw Samba imports Paulinho, Alan and Ricardo Goulart netting all but one of the goals.

With a single game of the group stage remaining, the two-time continental winners will be certain of a place in the last 16 if they avoid defeat at home to Suwon Samsung Bluewings of South Korea on May 9.
