Eight slots up for grabs before Copa Libertadores enters knockout play

Jonathan Gomez and Santa Fe must defeat The Strongest to advance in the Copa Libertadores.

Half of the places have been filled in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores. This final week of the group phase, then, is all about filling the other half.

Eight slots remain, and 14 teams are chasing them. In some cases, it is a straight shootout. In Group 5, for example, either Colombia's Santa Fe or The Strongest of Bolivia will join Santos of Brazil in the knockout phase. The two teams meet in Bogota on Tuesday. Santa Fe need to win. A draw is good enough for The Strongest. But the Bolivians...

How many of the remaining Copa Libertadores slots will Colombia grab?

As the group phase of the Copa Libertadores moves into the home straight, only four teams have so far booked their place in the knockout rounds -- Barcelona of Ecuador, Godoy Cruz and River Plate of Argentina and Atletico Mineiro of Brazil.

Twelve places remain. One of the themes of this week's action is clear; how many, if any, of these slots will go to Colombia?

The representatives...

Independiente Santa Fe pip Huracan on penalties in Sudamericana final

Santa Fe players celebrate
Independiente Santa Fe players celebrate after winning Wednesday's Copa Sudamericana final.

Argentina's recent stranglehold on South American club competitions came to an end on Wednesday night. After two goalless draws, Huracan were beaten on penalties in the final of the Copa Sudamericana by Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia.

There were wild celebrations in Bogota's El Campin stadium; this is Santa Fe's first continental title -- as it would have been, too, for Huracan had they prevailed. For contrasting reasons, then, both sets of supporters will remember this final.

It is highly unlikely,...
