Hugo Almeida is leaving FC Anzhi Makhachkala to return to the Bundesliga with Hannover.

BREMEN, Germany -- Portugal striker Hugo Almeida is returning to the Bundesliga to reunite with coach Thomas Schaaf at relegation-threatened Hannover.

Almeida played three-and-a-half seasons for Werder Bremen under Schaaf until 2010 and scored 41 goals in in 117 matches.

Hannover is next-to-last in the Bundesliga. Schaaf was hired after Michael Frontzeck quit at the start of the winter break in December. The Bundesliga resumes next weekend.

Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler lost belongings in Dubai hotel fire

Ron-Robert Zieler has returned to Germany after escaping a scare in Dubai.

Hannover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler lost his passport and other belongings in the fire that gutted a Dubai hotel on New Year's Eve.

Zieler, a reserve on Germany's World Cup-winning squad in 2014, said his 12th-floor room was completely "burnt out" by the fire, which injured 16 people.

"Luckily I wasn't in the room when the fire broke out," said Zieler, who needed to acquire a new passport with the German embassy before he could return to train with his club on Monday.

Thomas Schaaf appointed new Hannover boss in bid to avoid drop

A Thomas Muller penalty was enough to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory over Hannover.
Thomas Schaaf, who led Werder Bremen to their third and most recent Bundesliga title, last coached at Frankfurt.

Bundesliga strugglers Hannover have appointed former Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt coach Thomas Schaaf as their new coach on a contract until 2017.

Schaaf, 54, has been out of work since the end of last season and takes the place of Michael Frontzeck, who resigned prior to Christmas.

"I felt from the very first minutes of our talks that Thomas could fully identify with this challenge," Hannover's general manager Martin Bader told the club's official website.
