Newly promoted Hannover climbed to the top of the Bundesliga table with a 2-0 win over Hamburg on Friday night.

Martin Harnik struck the opener early in the second half and Ihlas Bebou added the second late on for the impressive newcomers.

The three points mean Hannover extend their current unbeaten run to 16 games and move top - until Sunday at least - for the first time in 48 years.

In-form Austrian Harnik opened the scoring when he pounced to poke home after Niclas Fullkrug headed the ball across...

Steve Cherundolo Q&A: Former U.S. star on coaching, national team, more

ESPN FC's Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez discuss the biggest takeaways for the U.S. following their Gold Cup triumph.

The Mayor of Hannover shows no signs of leaving office.

Steve Cherundolo arrived at Hannover 96 in 1999 as an unheralded outside back, and aside from stints with the U.S. national team, he never left. Cherundolo retired from the game in 2014 after making more than 420 league and cup appearances for Die Roten but has stayed with the club in a variety of coaching roles. He is going into his third season as manager of the club's U-17 team, but he also is taking on a role outside of his coaching...

Burnley friendly with Hannover called off following supporter violence

Hannover fans reportedly caused crowd trouble at Burnley.

Burnley's preseason friendly at home to Hannover was abandoned on police advice on Saturday.

The Clarets were leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Ben Mee when the announcement came. A short statement on the club's Twitter account read: "Today's game has been abandoned, on police advice."

A match report published on Burnley's official website said there were "concerns over supporter safety following unrest in the Cricket Field Stand, which housed around 500 supporters of the German club"...

Stuttgart and Hannover confirm promotion back to Bundesliga

Stuttgart coach Hannes Wolf is soaked in beer as the celebrations begin.

Stuttgart defeated Wurzburg 4-1 at home to return to the Bundesliga as 2. Bundesliga champions on Sunday, and were joined in the top flight by runners-up Hannover.

Daniel Ginczek set up three goals and scored the fourth for Stuttgart as the 2007 Bundesliga champions finished with 69 points and relegated their opponents.

Hannover, who drew 1-1 at Sandhausen, ended on 67 as both clubs, relegated from the Bundesliga last season, bounced straight back.

Hannover hire Heldt after sacking general manager and sporting director

Horst Heldt, right, served as general manager at Schalke.

HANNOVER, Germany -- German second-division side Hannover have sacked their general manager and sporting director to make way for former Schalke GM Horst Heldt.

Hannover, who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season, say Martin Bader and sporting director Christian Moeckel have been let go "with immediate effect."

Supervisory board members decided "the club's sporting leadership needs to be changed" to secure their immediate top-flight return.
