Paulinho gave Guangzhou a 1-0 first leg advantage over Kashima in the AFC Champions League round of 16.

A second-half strike from Paulinho gave Chinese powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande a first leg 1-0 win over Kashima Antlers of Japan in a Round of 16 2017 AFC Champions League tie on Tuesday night.

The victory puts the two-time champions within sight of the last eight, keeping them on course to add to the title won in 2013 and 2015.

Ricardo Goulart rounded off a fine move to equalise for Guangzhou in their AFC CL clash with Suwon Bluewings.

Guangzhou Evergrande squeezed into the knockout stage of the 2017 AFC Champions League with a 2-2 draw against Suwon Bluewings at Tianhe Stadium on Tuesday evening, thanks to a controversial goal from Brazilian forward Ricardo Goulart.

The Chinese Super League big-spenders, who were continental champions in 2013 and 2015, avoided last season's ignominious first-round exit to finish second in Group G.

Guangzhou Evergrande have been fined and handed a suspended two-game stadium fan ban after the Chinese Super League club was found guilty of breaching regulations in an AFC Champions League (ACL) win over Hong Kong's Eastern last month.
