Zesh Rehman endorses Josep Gombau for Malaysia coach, eyes Asia return

FC's Jason Dasey and Stanley Bernard look ahead to the controversial AFC Asian Cup match between Malaysia and North Korea.
Pahang and Zesh Rehman
Zesh Rehman, second left, captained Pahang on their 2016 preseason tour of Thailand.

As the painstaking search for Malaysia's next national coach goes on, former Fulham and Pahang defender Zesh Rehman says Australia under-23 boss Josep Gombau should be given the job to galvanise the squad for their 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign.

Rehman is a big admirer of the Spanish-born Gombau, having played under him at Hong Kong's Kitchee SC over two seasons in 2012-13.

The 40-year-old former Barcelona youth coach was mentioned in glowing terms by the Crown Prince of Johor (TMJ) when...

Gillingham preserved their League One status on the final day of the season with a goalless draw at Northampton.

Needing to match Port Vale's result at Fleetwood to assure survival, Gillingham started brightly and Josh Parker fired over, while the Cobblers went close when Brendan Moloney's shot was deflected wide.

Gillingham then wasted a glorious chance to settle the nerves in the ninth minute when David Buchanan impeded Cody McDonald in the box but David Cornell saved Josh Wright's ensuing spot-kick.

Kyle Dempsey's injury-time winner kept Fleetwood's automatic promotion hopes alive after they twice came from behind to win 3-2 against Gillingham.

An unfortunate own goal from Alex Cairns and Rory Donnelly's effort looked to have secured three points for the Gills, but Fleetwood battled back to clinch victory courtesy of goals from Ashley Hunter, David Ball and Dempsey.

The hosts took the lead when defender Zesh Rehman headed an effort against the post from a Lee Martin corner and it went in via Cairns.

Gillingham's relegation fears increased following a 3-0 defeat to struggling Charlton at The Valley.

Ady Pennock's men had the first opportunity of the game after just five minutes when Cody McDonald was fed nicely by Lee Martin but could only hit the side-netting.

Charlton's first chance came through Nathan Byrne who saw his shot deflect wide.

The subsequent corner in the 20th minute by Ricky Holmes found the head of Jason Pearce to score his first of the season to give the Addicks the lead.

Cody McDonald scored two late goals as Gillingham strengthened their chances of survival and struck a major blow to Bristol Rovers' promotion hopes with a 3-1 victory.

McDonald rifled a fine finish into the roof of the net in the 90th minute, just as the pressure was mounting on the hosts, before lofting Rovers keeper Joe Lumley in the sixth minute of added time.

The Gills had led through Josh Wright's thunderous strike from close range but Rovers levelled when Billy Bodin confidently converted a penalty.
