Japanese side Gamba Osaka proved too strong for Adelaide United, running out 3-0 winners in the opening match of Group H in the Asian Champions League at Coopers Stadium on Wednesday night.

Against the club they lost the 2008 Champions League final to, Adelaide struggled from early on in front of just more than 5,000 fans.

Gamba showed their tactical nous and created plenty of problems for United as they switched their formations in defence in attack.

TMJ praises JDT despite heavy Gamba Osaka loss in ACL

ESPN FC's John Wilkinson says JDT will lament their missed opportunity in the AFC Champions league.

Johor Darul Ta'zim earned plaudits from their Crown Prince owner Tunku Sultan Ismail, who says JDT are moving in the right direction, despite the 3-0 loss to a classy Gamba Osaka to in Asian Champions League (ACL) playoff on Tuesday.

JDT out of AFC Champions League after playoff loss to Gamba Osaka

ESPN FC's John Wilkinson says JDT will lament their missed opportunity in the AFC Champions league.

Johor Darul Ta'zim missed out on qualification for the AFC Champions League after 2008 winners Gamba Osaka brushed them aside 3-0 in a playoff in Japan on Tuesday night.

It means that the Malaysia Super League champions will play in the AFC Cup in 2017.
