Brazilian player out for eight months after bar fight with rival fans

Fluminense midfielder Marquinhos Calazans will undergo knee surgery and be sidelined for eight months after being involved in a bar fight with fans of a rival club.

Calazans, 21, was already recovering from an operation on his right knee when he clashed with Flamengo supporters in a Rio de Janeiro bar.

Fluminense doctor Michael Simoni told ESPN Brasil on Tuesday that Calazans' injured knee was stepped on during the brawl and the player will need to undergo another procedure.

The vulnerable economic situation of Rio's Fluminense likely cost the club the rights to Wendel, an emerging talent from Brazil.

This time last year, Brazilian midfielder Wendel was not even a household name in his own home. The 20-year-old only made his debut for Fluminense of Rio in mid-February. And fewer than 60 games later he is already on his way.

Paris Saint-Germain are in advanced talks to sign Fluminense midfielder Wendel, a Brazilian source has told ESPN FC.
