Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alex Song has signed a two-year contract with Sion of the Swiss Super League, the club announced on Tuesday.

Song, 30, joined Sion after parts of two seasons with Rubin Kazan, having left the club in January when FIFA intervened to terminate his contract because the club were falling behind on paying players' wages.

According to the Telegraph, Song was still owed £7.9 million by Rubin in June.

UEFA bans Swiss club Sion from European football for next two seasons

Sion have been banned from European football for two seasons and fined €235,000 (£203,000) for breaching UEFA's club licensing criteria.

European football's governing body said the Swiss Super League club owed French Ligue 2 side Sochaux €950,000 (£820,000) following the signing of Ishmael Yartey and -- under club licensing and financial fair play regulations -- should not have taken part in any of this season's UEFA competitions.

Sion president Christian Constantin has been hit with a 14-month stadium ban for slapping former Switzerland coach Rolf Fringer, but plans to attend the club's home game on Sunday.

Swiss police have said that Sion fans attacked the team bus of second-tier side Servette as it headed home from an away match.

Police in Aargau canton said on Sunday that the incident -- which left Servette's two drivers injured due to broken glass -- happened at a highway rest area on Saturday evening.
