As the second half of the MLS season begins Saturday, the time has come to unveil the first Soccer Power Index projections of the season, for the three major races: playoffs, top two seeds and the Supporters' Shield.

As a reminder, ESPN's Soccer Power Index (SPI) is a regression-based algorithm based on the past four seasons, with recent results weighted more heavily. SPI generates offensive and defensive ratings for each team, then uses those ratings to project the remainder of the season, producing the numbers you see below.

Early goals from Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes lifted LA Galaxy to a road win against rivals Portland Timbers.

Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes scored in the opening 11 minutes as the LA Galaxy beat Portland 2-1 on Saturday to snap the Timbers' nine-game undefeated streak.

Zarek Valentin scored for the Timbers, who were stung when they lost veteran defender Nat Borchers to what appeared to be a left ankle injury late in the first half. Borchers was a key piece to the Timbers' team that won the MLS Cup last season.

LA Galaxy host FC Dallas, New England face Chicago in U.S. Open Cup semis

MLSsoccer.com's Jillian Sakovits takes a look back at the exciting quarterfinal matches in the US Open Cup.

The LA Galaxy will host FC Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals.

In the other game, the Chicago Fire will travel to meet the New England Revolution, after all four teams advanced in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

U.S. Soccer conducted the draw on Thursday morning. Both games will be televised on ESPN2 on Aug. 10.

The Fire will host the Sept. 21 final should they advance, but if the Revolution win they will play on the road at the LA-Dallas winner.

The New England Revolution beat the Philadelphia Union 4-2 on penalties to advance to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals.

Diego Fagundez found Je-Vaughn Watson from a set piece and the midfielder's left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner beat Union goalkeeper Andre Blake to make it 1-0 ahead of the break.

Kei Kamara was dangerous throughout the second half, calling Blake into action once from 18 yards out and again from just inside the penalty...

Wonder goals lift FC Dallas over Fire; Rapids beat Sporting Kansas City

FC Dallas put their loss to Seattle in the rearview mirror with a dominant victory over Chicago Fire.

Mauro Diaz scored from distance and Fabian Castillo had two assists in FC Dallas' 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night.

Castillo beat a pair of defenders and sent in a perfect cross with a stunning Rabona that Maximiliano Urriti blasted in with a header in the 23rd minute.

Diaz fired a right-footer, from well outside the box, past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Matt Lampson, off the post and into the net.
