Former Colorado Rapids defender Shane O'Neill joins Excelsior

Former Colorado Rapids defender Shane O'Neill has signed for Dutch Eredivisie club Excelsior Rotterdam. 

O'Neill, a former Homegrown player at Colorado, played four seasons with the club, appearing in 52 matches.

He then joined Cyprus' Apollon Limassol in August of 2015 before moving being sent on loan to England, Belgium and Dutch second-division side NAC Breda last summer.

A United States youth international, O'Neill represented his country at the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Shane O'Neill is set to move to Netherlands permanently after spending time there on loan.

Former U.S. youth international defender Shane O'Neill has secured a transfer to Dutch Eredivisie side Excelsior from Cypriot club Apollon Limossol.

O'Neill, a dual national who also holds an Irish passport, arrived in the Netherlands on Sunday. He signed a one-year contract with the option for a second on Monday.

Fans turned on police after Feyenoord squandered the chance to win their first Eredivisie title in 18 years in suffering a 3-0 defeat at Excelsior in the Rotterdam derby on Sunday.

Some 50,000 fans had gathered in Feyenoord's De Kuip stadium to watch the match on giant screens, and to celebrate the coronation of their team as champions, but instead left disappointed.
