Argentina World Cup winner Brown dies at 62

World Cup winner Jose Luis Brown, who scored Argentina's opening goal in the 1986 World Cup final against West Germany, has died at the age of 62, local media reported on Monday.

The country's football association confirmed the former central defender's death in a tweet, while former Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta also tweeted his condolences.

D.C. United acquires Lucas Rodriguez, 21, on initial loan from Estudiantes

D.C. United added promising Argentine attacking midfielder Lucas Rodriguez on an initial loan with an option to buy on Monday.

Although he's just 21, Rodriguez has already made 90 first-team appearances for Estudiantes in Argentina, scording eight goals with five assists.

Rodriguez was also a key figure in Argentina's under-20 national team, starting at the U-20 World Cup and the South American Championship in 2017.

Copa Libertadores trophy has club's name misspelled on winners' plaque

CONMEBOL did not win any fans in Argentina when football's governing body in South America last month decided to move the return leg of the Copa Libertadores final out of the country.

They have lost even more since the trophy was awarded to River Plate after Sunday's 3-1 triumph over bitter arch-rivals Boca Juniors in Madrid.

Time was the whole world of football held great interest in the Copa Libertadores.

Estudiantes of Argentina and Santos of Brazil fought out an entertaining clash on Thursday night in the Copa Libertadores. The Argentines pressed for most of the match, but were caught on the break in the first half and conceded the only goal of the match -- a clear case of offside that nonetheless sent the visitors home 1-0 winners.
