Rangers bounce back with win over Kano Pillars as Kadiri Ikhana resigns

Rangers have suffered quite enough this season, but things are looking up following their 3-1 win over Kano Pillars.

With the Nigeria Professional League having taken a midseason break after the conclusion of the first round of matches, only one game was played this weekend.

Most of the other matches took place in midweek, but there was plenty of drama both on and off the pitch.

Here are five highlights from the past round:

1. Rangers bounce back

Champions Rangers have suffered quite enough this season. But if their 3-1 win over Kano Pillars is anything to go by, it appears their woes are on the verge of being...

Enugu Rangers relegation would be a nightmare story for Nigerian football

If Rangers go down, this could be the start of a descent into oblivion. And the club will not be the only losers.

Gradually, but with a sense of near inevitability, Enugu Rangers are inexorably drawing closer and closer to the once unthinkable: relegation.

Led by the likes of Christian Chukwu and Emmanuel Okala, the Flying Antelopes, carrying the hopes of the people of southeast Nigeria fresh off the civil war, pulverised almost anything in their path from the 1970s to '80s (okay, all but Shooting Stars, who ran them all the way) as they cantered to six league titles.

The last of those championships was won...

Tempers flare on Match Day 18 of Nigeria Premier League action

Enugu Rangers have fallen flat in their championship defence, causing Imama Amapakabo to be sacked.

This is one weekend that Nigeria league organisers will want to forget. After 17 match days of near hitch-free football, things took a turn for the worse this weekend.

Crowd trouble at two venues led to all manner of negative headlines that overshadowed one very significant road win.

But by far the biggest headline of the weekend was from a team who didn't play domestic football this weekend. Defending champion Enugu Rangers sacked coach Imama Amapakabo, sparking comparisons with Leicester City's...

Plateau United reassert themselves atop the Nigeria Premier League table

Stephen Odey, in purple, was joined by Plateau United's Reuben Bala in the Nigeria Premier League's hat trick club.

After just one matchday of staring up at MFM FC, Plateau United returned to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table in emphatic style this week, handing ABS FC their heaviest defeat in a 4-1 thrashing.

MFM, who had dislodged Plateau from top spot following a 2-1 home victory over the then-league leaders, put up a horrendously poor performance as they went down 1-0 to Gombe United. The only surprise in that game was that MFM only lost by a single goal.

Here are five takeaways from...

Stephen Odey hits double figures as MFM defeat NPFL leaders Plateau 2-1

Another thrilling week of NPFL action is in the books, with Enyimba captain Mfon Udoh striking in a 1-1 draw against ABS.

League leaders Plateau United against third-placed MFM FC was the highlight of a superb weekend of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches and there were milestones aplenty on the day, as Nigeria football federation president Amaju Pinnick -- who was just elected to the CAF executive committee, becoming only the third Nigerian to be so elevated -- was at the grounds. Accompanying him were his two vice presidents, one of whom is chairman of the league organising body, and a posse of other...
