Darmstadt coach Dirk Schuster asks to terminate contract

Manager Dirk Schuster took the reins of Darmstadt back when they were in Germany's third division.
Dirk Schuster has been linked with Augsburg.

Darmstadt say coach Dirk Schuster has asked to be released from his contract, despite it running until 2018.

Schuster took Darmstadt from the third division to the Bundesliga in consecutive seasons, while the club secured a spot in the top tier in the next season as well.

Darmstadt president Ruediger Fritsch says the club will discuss Schuster's request before making a decision.

Schuster has been widely linked with Augsburg, whose coach Markus Weinzierl in turn is expected to move to Schalke.

Pep Guardiola hails resilient Bayern side for peforming despite injuries

Pep Guardiola expressed his pride with his remaining Bayern Munich players after the injury-hit club saw off Darmstadt 1-0 in the DFB Pokal round of 16 on Tuesday.

Only five substitutes suited up for Bayern, who have been depleted by injuries to the likes of Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, Franck Ribery, Mario Gotze, Juan Bernat, David Alaba and Medhi Benatia.

And Guardiola hailed the resiliency of his side, who have one Bundesliga game left before the long winter break.

Darmstadt promoted to Bundesliga after win over St Pauli

Dirk Schuster celebrates Darmstadt's promotion to the German first division.

Darmstadt have followed Ingolstadt in earning promotion to the Bundesliga after a dramatic final day of action in the 2. Bundesliga.

Midway through the second half at the Stadion am Bollenfalltor, Darmstadt were as low as fourth in the standings and not even on course for a playoff berth.

However, a Tobias Kempe goal in the 71st minute of their game against St Pauli earned them the win they needed to march straight through the second division in their first season since promotion from the third...
