Crew SC picks up contract options on Higuain, Meram and Trapp

Federico Higuain joined Columbus in 2012.

Columbus Crew SC has announced that contract options on three players -- Federico Higuain, Justin Meram and Wil Trapp -- have been exercised.

Higuain is a two-time club MVP award winner and his 35 career goals rank him fifth on the club's all-time scoring list. In 2016, the 32-year-old had four goals and four assists.

Meram was Columbus' MVP in 2016 after a season in which he scored five goals and added 13 assists. He is currently the club's longest-tenured player, having been drafted in 2011.

U.S. international defender Omar Gonzalez has met with Columbus Crew manager Gregg Berhalter about a possible return to MLS, according to a report on

A Crew spokesperson confirmed to ESPN FC that Gonzalez and Berhalter met in Columbus when the former was in town for last Friday's World Cup qualifier between the U.S. and Mexico. But the spokesperson insisted that the meeting was purely social, given that the two were teammates on the LA Galaxy between 2009 and 2011.

Union rookie Keegan Rosenberry wins MLS Fair Play award

Keegan Rosenberry, left, was not booked all season for the Philadelphia Union.

Keegan Rosenberry of the Philadelphia Union won the MLS Fair Play award in his rookie season on Friday.

Rosenberry, an All-Star, was not booked all season despite playing every minute of every game for the Union this season, totaling over 3,000 minutes.

He was finally removed for a substitute for the first time in the final six minutes of the Union's playoff defeat to Toronto FC.
