MLS teams have more room to pay big money for defenders, like LA Galaxy's recently re-signed Jelle van Damme.

You don't have to go back too far in Major League Soccer to see that high-priced signings were almost the exclusive purview of attacking players. It made sense. In a salary-cap league, that was where teams -- especially those willing to shell out money for the league's highest paid players -- could get the most bang for the buck. But this offseason, there has been a noticeable shift in where teams allocate their precious financial assets.

Columbus Crew SC adds midfielder Artur on loan from Sao Paulo

Artur helped Sao Paulo win the Under-20 Copa Libertadores last year.

Columbus Crew SC added Brazilian midfielder Artur on loan from Sao Paulo for the 2017 season on Monday.

Artur, 20, came up through the youth system at Bahia before moving to Sao Paulo, where he impressed in the under-20 squad, helping the team to the Copa Libertadores youth title.

He made four appearances for Sao Paulo's first team last season.

Columbus signs Ghana international Mohammed Abu from Stromsgodset

Mohammed Abu played for Ghana at the 2012 African Nations Cup.

Midfielder Mohammed Abu joined Columbus Crew SC on Tuesday as a special discovery player from Norwegian club Stromsgodset.

The 25-year-old previously played in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano and Ligue 1 with Lorient.
