MLS unveils new Los Angeles franchise set to begin play in 2017

ESPN FC's Taylor Twellman and Alexi Lalas discuss the announcement of Major League Soccer's latest club, Los Angeles FC, and what impact their powerful owners might have within the MLS.

Major League Soccer on Thursday announced its approval of a new team to be based in Los Angeles.

The new franchise, known for now as Los Angeles Football Club, follows the closing of struggling L.A. team Chivas USA, which MLS officially shut down on Monday.

MLS plans for LAFC to debut in 2017 in a new soccer stadium in the Los Angeles area that will be built specifically for the team.

"We are thrilled to welcome Henry Nguyen, Peter Guber, Tom Penn and their owner partners to Major League Soccer,"...

Despite Chivas USA's misstep, Garber still bullish on MLS in L.A.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber, center left, still defends Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara, center right, for wanting a second team in Los Angeles.

It doesn't take much to jog the memory of MLS commissioner Don Garber and take him back to 2004, when MLS was embarking on its first expansion in seven years.

Dave Checketts was set to bring a team to Salt Lake City, but what really caught Garber's eye was the proposal of Chivas Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara, along with brothers Antonio and Lorenzo Cue, to bring a second team to Los Angeles.

"We were so excited about it," Garber said by telephone. "Vergara and Antonio Cue had this unique and...

Chivas USA took all three points over the San Jose Earthquakes in their last match of the season, the club's final match ever in Major League Soccer as they will be replaced by a new club in 2017.

I know how it feels for your team to be a punch line. As a Sunderland fan for almost four decades, the newest debacles always have to be put in the context of what came before:

An 8-0 defeat followed by a 2-0 loss featuring two calamitous errors, infinite GIF image quality goals? Yes, and ...?

It's why, among the soft spots I have for different pockets of fan culture around MLS, there's a special place in my heart for Chivas USA fans, who spent Sunday watching their team play its last game.

Of course...

MLS shuts down Chivas USA; new club, ownership to return in 2017

Chivas USA took all three points over the San Jose Earthquakes in their last match of the season, the club's final match ever in Major League Soccer as they will be replaced by a new club in 2017.

Troubled Major League Soccer club Chivas USA will cease operations, effective immediately, and will be replaced by a club that will begin play in the league in 2017, MLS announced on Monday.

The new ownership group -- which, according to SI.com, includes venture capitalist Henry Nguyen, Mandalay Entertainment Chairman and CEO Peter Guber, former NBA executive and current ESPN analyst Tom Penn, and current Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan -- will be officially introduced on Thursday....

Chivas USA took all three points over the San Jose Earthquakes in their last match of the season, the club's final match ever in Major League Soccer as they will be replaced by a new club in 2017.

CARSON, Calif. -- Felix Borja scored in the 32nd minute, and Chivas USA beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in the season finale for both teams on Sunday.

Erick Torres beat defender Víctor Bernardez along the end line and bounced his shot off the far post. Borja was in the middle of the box for the rebound and finished with a left-footed toe punch for his third goal of the season.

With the future of the franchise in limbo, the win may mark the end of Chivas USA (9-19-6). ...
