Toronto FC close in on first-ever playoff berth, Red Bulls top Crew

Toronto FC were able to inch closer to securing a spot in the playoffs winning their Major League Soccer match at home against the Philadelphia Union.

Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore scored as Toronto FC beat the Philadelphia Union 3-1 on Saturday to close in on the first playoff berth in franchise history.

Toronto improved to 14-13-4. Philadelphia (9-16-7) was eliminated from playoff contention.

Didier Drogba scored twice in the first 12 minutes and the Montreal Impact beat D.C. United 2-0 on Saturday to stretch their club-record unbeaten streak to six games.

Drogba had seven goals in six MLS games. In the fourth minute, he took a free kick after Taylor Kemp's handball and drilled it over the defensive wall and into the top corner.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire have dismissed coach Frank Yallop and hired MLS executive Nelson Rodriguez as general manager.

Technical director Brian Bliss will serve as interim coach for the final five games.

The shakeup, announced on Sunday, comes with the Fire at league-worst record. They are nine points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

On top of parting ways with Yallop after nearly two seasons with Chicago, the Fire have let go of assistants Marc Bircham and Clint Mathis.
