Champs Arsenal women win, Chelsea beat Spurs

Beth Mead, Arsena
Arsenal celebrate after Beth Mead's opener against West Ham.

An unstoppable Beth Mead goal helped champions Arsenal to a narrow 2-1 win over West Ham in their FA Women's Super League opener on Sunday, while Beth England's early rocket proved enough for Chelsea as they beat newcomers Tottenham Hotspur 1-0.

Although last year's top scorer Vivianne Miedema missed the game with a tight hamstring, Mead's thunderous shot put Arsenal ahead in the 14th minute, and she then teed up debutant Jill Roord to make it 2-0 just before halftime.

LONDON -- In the mind of Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes, Sunday's first-leg showdown with Lyon in the Champions League semifinals is a moment seven years in the making.

"Not a week, not two weeks, not this season," she says during a 30-minute conversation in her office, which overlooks her team's plush pitches at the rear of Chelsea's sprawling Cobham training complex. "Everybody's aware of the disappointments we've had domestically, but sustained success is incredibly difficult."
