Spain's Luis Enrique: Not initially picking Iago Aspas a 'mistake'

Steve Nicol breaks down both sides' performances in Spain's 2-1 win over England and responds to the controversial call on Danny Welbeck.
UEFA Nations League: Danny Welbeck goal disallowed (90'+7') England 1-2 Spain
Marcus Rashford's opener was offset by goals from Saúl Ñíguez and Rodrigo to give Spain a 2-1 away win over England.
UEFA Nations League: David De Gea (35') England 1-2 Spain

Spain coach Luis Enrique has admitted he made a mistake to not select Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas in his initial squad after seeing him in training.

Aspas played in three of Spain's four games at the World Cup in Russia but was not a part of Luis Enrique's plans for the UEFA Nations League matches against England and Croatia. Luis Enrique later added the player to the group after Diego Costa requested permission to leave the team to be present at his daughter's birth.

Aspas started and played...

La Liga's maverick magicians entertain Spain from their backyards

Check out all the action you might have missed this weekend, from Kyle Walker's stunning winner to Lionel Messi and Barcelona's dominant win.

Any other 37-year-old man with a mop of shockingly bleached hair, dancing wildly late on a Sunday night, shirt off and posing like the Hulk in full "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry" mode, would draw derogatory comments about his "midlife crisis." But Joaquin Sanchez is no ordinary man. No ordinary footballer, either.

Somehow, the Real Betis captain is dreams made flesh. Wildly talented at football, uproariously funny, durable given that his club's medics announced last season that he's been...

Diego Costa withdraws from Spain squad for personal reasons

Spain called up Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas to replace Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa for the upcoming UEFA Nations League encounters against England and Croatia.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said on Monday that Costa requested to be dropped for personal reasons.

Spain face England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday in Luis Enrique's first game in charge, then host Croatia three days later at the Estadio Martinez Valero in Elche.

Aspas was left out of the squad last week despite having...

VIGO, Spain -- Atletico Madrid suffered their first major setback of the season as they lost 2-0 at Celta Vigo after defender Stefan Savic was sent off midway through a miserable second-half performance by Diego Simeone's side on Saturday.

Celta's Uruguayan striker Maxi Gomez put the Galicians ahead straight after the break when he pounced on a slip by compatriot Diego Godin and Iago Aspas doubled the lead in the 52nd minute with a header the day after being dropped from the Spain squad by new coach...

Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal sent to Celta Vigo on loan deal

Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal was sent to Spanish club Celta Vigo on a season-long loan.

Boufal came to Southampton in 2016 from Lille, and made 59 appearances, scoring four times.

The Moroccan fell out of favor with manager Mark Hughes at the end of last season. A statement on the Southampton website said: "We wish Sofiane good luck for the season ahead."
