Burnley defender James Tarkowski leaves England camp for surgery

England defender James Tarkowski has returned to Burnley from a World Cup training camp to undergo a hernia operation, the Football Association has announced.

The 28-year-old, who earned his first England cap in March, was named on Gareth Southgate's five-man standby list and had been training with the national team.

But following assessment, it has been agreed that Tarkowski requires surgery and he will not play any part at the World Cup.

Despite England's recent struggles, Ian Darke and the ESPN panel are cautiously optimistic about England's World Cup chances.

Nick Pope accepts he may only have "half a chance'' of making England's World Cup squad but considers that a success in itself having started the season as Burnley's No. 2.

Steven Gerrard adds Scott Arfield from Burnley as first Rangers signing

Steven Gerrard cites ambition and positivity as key reasons as to why he chose Rangers to begin his managerial career.

Scott Arfield has joined Rangers from Burnley on a four-year deal, becoming the first signing of the Steven Gerrard era.

Arfield, 29, had been with Burnley since 2013 and has won 12 caps for Canada.
