Aaron Wilbraham headed his 15th goal of the season as Bristol City opened up an eight-point gap at the top with a 1-0 home victory over Rochdale.

The veteran striker lost his marker following Luke Freeman's 14th-minute corner to direct a powerful effort into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

From then on City had to defend solidly against impressive opponents, who would have taken at least a point with better finishing.

Rochdale had some excellent first-half chances, Peter Vincenti wasting the best...

Bristol City returned to form to strengthen their grip at the top of the League One table with a hard-fought 3-1 win at Doncaster.

The game was closer than the scoreline suggested as Doncaster battled back in spirited style after City had taken charge with an impressive first-half display which saw them 2-0 in front.

Luke Freeman fired the visitors ahead in the 10th minute after taking advantage of a lucky deflection when a misplaced pass from Aaron Wilbraham bounced off a defender straight to his...

Bristol City suffered their first league away defeat since December in a shock 3-2 defeat at struggling Colchester.

Colchester took a third-minute lead through Tom Lapslie, who headed in his first-ever senior goal from close range after visiting goalkeeper Frank Fielding had failed to hold on to Elliott Hewitt's cross.

It got even worse for the leaders 11 minutes later when Macauley Bonne marked his first Colchester start since 2013 with a superb header from Matt Briggs' excellent cross.

Bristol City extended their lead at the top of League One to five points with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Peterborough at Ashton Gate.

Aden Flint shot the home side ahead from close range after nine minutes after Posh had failed to deal with a left-wing corner, the big centre-back capitalising with his fifth goal of the campaign when Joe Bryan's header was blocked.

The impressive Bryan also set up the second goal after 48 minutes, hitting a post with a fierce shot and then latching onto the rebound...

Bristol City increased their lead at the top of League One with a 3-1 victory over Port Vale at Ashton Gate.

With Milton Keynes losing at Bradford on Monday and Swindon suffering the same fate at Oldham, Steve Cotterill's men took full advantage with goals from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Joe Bryan and Matt Smith moving them four points clear at the top.

Emmanuel-Thomas broke some stern Vale resistance with a solo effort in the 34th minute, driving at the visiting defence before unleashing a fierce left-footed...
