Transfer Rater: Keane to Liverpool

VAR's English debut brings more uncertainty than clarity

Arsene Wenger is happy with the addition of VAR in the FA Cup, but has concerns that it could slow the game down.

It probably wasn't a handball. Or it might have been. It was difficult to tell. From one angle it looked fine, from another it was possible to see a hint of arm. After watching about 10 replays you could make some pretty strident arguments that the goal shouldn't have been allowed. And some of equal conviction that it was fine.

Welcome to VAR. Or, in this case, not. As Glenn Murray glanced home Brighton's winner in their 2-1 FA Cup win over rivals Crystal Palace, for a moment it looked like we might...

Martin Jol: Chris Hughton's Tottenham connections help rise to top

Martin Jol is not easily lost for words but on Aug. 18, 2012 he struggled to find the right ones.

Jol's Fulham had just opened the Premier League season with a resounding 5-0 home win but the Dutchman found himself shifting uncomfortably in his office afterwards. Philippe Coutinho was the outstanding...

Laboured Man United get lucky vs. Brighton as strike trio fail to inspire

MANCHESTER, England -- Three thoughts on Manchester United's 1-0 win over Brighton as they continued their fine home form but struggled to impress.

1. Laboured United get lucky

The best that could be said about Manchester United is that this was the kind of match they drew last season. For long periods their labours brought back memories of matches against Burnley, Stoke, Bournemouth and Swansea, where a smaller club escaped Old Trafford with a point after Jose Mourinho's team struggled to...

Burnley, Watford, Brighton, Huddersfield show promise in Prem

Small is beautiful in this season's Premier League. English football's "big six" are jockeying for position in the table as expected, but below them lie Burnley, Watford, Brighton and Huddersfield, clubs punching above their weight while drawing strength from having a definite plan.

Breakthrough stars of the 2016-17 season are previously unheralded players like Ben Mee and Chris Wood at Burnley, Richarlison and Abdoulaye Doucoure at Watford, Shane Duffy and Davy Propper at Brighton and Aaron Mooy...
