Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat trick carries Man United; Tottenham lose first leg

Behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hat trick, Man United took a commanding lead in their UEL round of 32 tie against St Etienne.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hat trick gave Manchester United a 3-0 win against St Etienne in a Europa League round of 32 first-leg clash at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Ibrahimovic opened the scoring in unusual circumstances after 15 minutes when his free kick struck the St Etienne wall and deflected towards goal leaving St Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier wrong-footed and stranded before crawling over the line.

He added an important second in the 74th minute as substitute Marcus Rashford squared from...

Andreas Christensen Borussia Monchengladbach
Andreas Christensen has flourished at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Thorgan Hazard has backed teammate Andreas Christensen to make a big impact at Chelsea when he returns from his loan at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Christensen, a Danish centre-back, has flourished in a two-year stay with the Bundesliga club.

And Hazard is in no doubt that the 20-year-old can make the step up when he goes back to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

"When he arrived everybody in the team and at the club were saying: 'Wow, what a defender, what a player,'" he told Goal.

"He is strong, he...

Monchengladbach will battle to keep Max Eberl amid Bayern Munich links

Max Eberl has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

Borussia Monchengladbach have said they will fight to keep sporting director Max Eberl, who has been linked with the vacant position at Bayern Munich.

On Thursday, kicker reported that 43-year-old Eberl is "the first option" for Bayern, who have been looking for a new sporting director since Matthias Sammer's departure last summer.

The magazine claimed president Uli Hoeness wants to bring the former Bayern player back to the Allianz Arena, but said CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had a more "distanced"...

Bayern edge Wolfsburg to reach Pokal quarters; Bobby Wood lifts Hamburg

German DFB Pokal: Douglas Costa (17') Bayern Munich 1-0 VfL Wolfsburg

A first-half strike from Douglas Costa was enough for holders Bayern Munich to edge Wolfsburg 1-0 at home and scrape into the DFB Pokal quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Costa scored with a deflected shot in the 18th minute, but Bayern failed to build on their greater possession and were made to suffer late on as Wolfsburg grew in confidence.

Yunus Malli should have equalised with less than 10 minutes remaining, but Manuel Neuer denied his solo effort and the Bayern goalkeeper was called into action...

Bayern Munich frustrated by Schalke, Dortmund hold on to beat Leipzig

Despite Thomas Muller's struggles this season, Raf Honigstein quips that there'd be a riot if Bayern Munich sell him.
Naldo celebrates his equaliser for Schalke on Saturday.
Naldo clinched a 1-1 draw for Schalke against Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Schalke as the Bundesliga leaders laboured to another unconvincing display on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski fired Bayern into an early lead with his 15th goal of the season but Naldo equalised from a free kick minutes later and the home side missed a number of chances to claim the winner late on.

The result will increase the pressure on Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, who had come in for criticism following a perceived dip in performance over previous...
