New York City FC's Joe Scally, 16, leaving MLS to join Borussia Monchengladbach

New York City FC defender Joe Scally is leaving Major League Soccer to join Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, the club has announced.

Scally, 16, who played on the U.S. team that was eliminated in the group stage of the Under-17 World Cup two weeks ago, will complete the move to Germany in January 2021 when the winter transfer window opens.

NYCFC said Wednesday the transfer fee for the Lake Grove, New York, native was at least $1 million, which the team said was the highest for a 16-year-old...

Joe Scally's move from NYCFC to Gladbach is a sign of what's to come from MLS academies

Joe Scally looks on during the MLS match between New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls.
Joe Scally will move to Borussia Monchengladbach once he turns 18 on Dec. 31, 2020.

When Joe Scally was 14, his youth coaches at New York City FC moved him from central midfielder to right-back. On the field, the distance amounted to about 25 yards, give or take. Two years on, it's set to translate into a journey of thousands of miles, and for NYCFC, it could well turn into a quantum leap.

Scally, now 16, has been transferred to German side and Bundesliga leaders Borussia Monchengladbach. Sources tell ESPN that the initial fee is around $2 million, with add-ons in the form of "very...

Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt scored twice in three minutes late in the second half to help them come from a goal down and beat visitors Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-1 on Wednesday in the German Cup second round.

Germany midfielder Brandt fired in a deflected effort in the 77th minute after Marcus Thuram gave the Bundesliga leaders a deserved lead six minutes earlier.

Brandt was then left completely unmarked in the box to head an 80th-minute the winner, offering his club some respite after a string...
