Marseille returned to the top of the Ligue 1 standings thanks to a 3-1 victory over Bordeaux on Sunday.

Sagnol, capped 58 times by France and a member of the team which lost the 2006 World Cup final, gave a question and answer session on Tuesday to readers of Sud Ouest regional newspaper when the subject of African players was raised.

"The advantage of what I would call the typical African player is that he isn't expensive...

Contrasting fortunes for managerial debutants Makelele and Sagnol

Former France international Claude Makelele has been sacked by Bastia in his first role as a head coach.

It was always set to be an unpredictable season for Ligue 1's head coaches, after seven of the division's 20 clubs changed bosses in the summer.
