Bengaluru FC (BFC) will face Altyn Asyr of Turkmenistan in their 2018 AFC Cup inter-zone playoff semi-finals -- effectively the quarter-finals -- on August 22 and August 29, with the home leg taking place first. This will be the first assignment for their new coach, following Albert Roca's decision to leave after guiding the club to the knockout stages after a dramatic 4-0 win away to Dhaka Abahani of Bangladesh, even as former I-League champions Aizawl FC beat New Radiant of Maldives 2-1. This...

Albert Roca's legacy: Asian success, grooming young talent

Albert Roca.
Albert Roca.

Albert Roca's tenure as Bengaluru FC (BFC) coach ended just the way it began -- with a continental win and progress in a tournament not many would have predicted ahead of the game.

The 1-0 win over Tampines Rovers of Singapore in the AFC Cup quarterfinals of 2016 was massive because it gave BFC a toehold in the competition despite their new coach having been in charge for just over a month. Wednesday evening was a minor miracle, given their fate was dependent on Aizawl FC pulling off a result against...

AFC Cup, Roca's future on the line as BFC take on Abahani

Albert Roca coached BFC to the AFC Cup final in 2016

In what could be Albert Roca's final match in charge of the club, Bengaluru FC (BFC) face Dhaka Abahani away in an AFC Cup group match on Wednesday, hoping at the same time for a favour from Aizawl FC.

ESPN understands that BFC and Roca are on the verge of parting ways, though a small window of opportunity for an extension for Roca could present itself should the two-time I-League champions qualify for the knockouts. For that to happen though, BFC need to better New Radiant's result against Aizawl.

Virtuoso Chhetri produces vintage performance as BFC thrash Aizawl in the AFC Cup

In the last minute of the first half with Bengaluru FC leading Aizawl FC 3-0 in the AFC Cup, Chhetri had already done his bit for the evening.

With a goal and an assist until then, Chhetri was fuming at right-back Laldinliana's tackle on him when he had only the keeper to beat. The tackle from behind is risky - either a clearance, or a penalty and a red card. Chhetri bangs the turf; it's probably not displeasure at the refereeing decision, but the action of a top professional unhappy with...

BFC thrash East Bengal to lift Super Cup

Bhubaneshwar -- Bengaluru FC picked up their fifth major trophy in as many years, after beating East Bengal 4-1 to clinch the inaugural Super Cup.

Ansumnah Kromah gave East Bengal the lead in the 28th minute, but goals from Rahul Bheke (39), Sunil Chhetri (69' penalty, 90') and Miku (71') gave BFC a comfortable win.

Half chances were aplenty at either end, but it was East Bengal who broke the deadlock midway through the first half. Katsumi's corner was palmed away by Gurpreet Singh...
