Minister wants Furiani disaster marked with no games on May 5

Bastia players marked the anniversary of the Furiani disaster with a minute's silence last season.

France's Sports Minister Thierry Braillard has proposed that no football games should be played on May 5 in memory of those who died at the Furiani disaster 23 years ago.

Eighteen people were killed and more than 2000 were injured when a temporary stand at Bastia's Stade Furiani collapsed prior to the 1992 Coupe de France semifinal with Marseille.

Bastia supporters' groups have been campaigning for years to have the date of the tragedy -- May 5 -- marked by having no matches staged on it.
