Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat trick fires Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon lose again

Ibra slotted home three goals and Edinson Cavani scored another as PSG rolled to a 5-0 win vs. St. Etienne.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hat-trick inspired Paris Saint-Germain as they put their faltering start to the Ligue 1 season behind them with a commanding 5-0 thrashing of St Etienne.

Stephane Ruffier's inexplicable own goal got the Parisians' evening off to a perfect start when the goalkeeper allowed Jeremy Clement's pass back beyond him. Ibrahimovic added a second before the break.

The Sweden captain helped himself to a second shortly after the hour mark and Edinson Cavani added a fourth before the Sw...

Bordeaux's impressive 100 per cent start to the season came to an end on Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Bastia at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.

Junior Tallo's first-half strike, his second of the campaign, seemed like giving Claude Makelele's men their second consecutive 1-0 Ligue 1 win before Diego Rolan broke Corsican hearts with little over 10 minutes left.

The hosts began the brighter but almost gifted Bastia an opening goal when Cedric Carrasso cleared straight to Christopher Maboulou, who could o...

Bastia fan jailed for role in violence

Violence marred the Ligue 1 opener.

A supporter involved in violence which left 44 police officers injured during the opening weekend of the Ligue 1 season has been jailed.

The unnamed Bastia fan was also handed a three-year stadium ban for his part in the ugly incidents around his club's home match with Marseille to open the French top-flight campaign on Aug. 9.

The man, who was suspected of throwing a barrier at police and was already under a suspended sentence for an unrelated incident, is the first to be jailed as a result of...

Claude Makelele claimed his first win as a manager as Bastia overcame Toulouse 1-0 in Ligue 1 on Saturday night.

The Corsican outfit had lost one and drawn one of their opening two league fixtures but Ryad Boudebouz's 24th-minute penalty was enough to give them all three points this time.

The victory will prove a welcome distraction for Makelele, who had seen his preparations for the game dominated by striker Brandao, the Brazilian being provisionally suspended until September 18 by the Disciplina...

Brandao provisionally suspended

PSG head coach Laurent Blanc has confirmed Thiago Motta will be available for their game with Evian this weekend.

Brandao has been provisionally suspended until mid-September following his head-butt on Paris Saint-Germain's Thiago Motta.

- Paris police interview Motta

Brandao, 34, attended the French Football League (LFP) disciplinary commission's preliminary hearing into the incident in Paris on Thursday even though the body had not summoned him to appear before them.

The Brazilian reportedly hoped to explain his actions, which left Motta, 31, with a broken nose after being butted by the Bastia striker fol...
