George Waring was Barnsley's hero for the second game in a row as boss Lee Johnson celebrated his first home match in charge with a 1-0 win over struggling Coventry, who had new manager Tony Mowbray watching from the directors' box.

Mowbray will have had most to ponder after watching an unconvincing City slip to defeat thanks to a 56th-minute header from Waring as the Tykes sealed a fourth successive win.

The hosts had a scare in the fourth minute when City striker Dominic Samuel charged down Adam...

Barnsley striker Sam Winnall is expected to make his long-awaited return to action in new boss Lee Johnson's first home game in charge against Coventry.

Winnall has been sidelined long-term with a hamstring injury but could be included in Johnson's starting line-up with Milan Lalkovic likely to make way.

Peter Ramage remains sidelined, but fellow defender Jean Yves Mvoto will return to contention after missing Saturday's win at Gillingham due to a one-game ban and winger Dale Jennings is expected to...

Lee Johnson enjoyed a winning start as Barnsley manager as George Waring's second-half strike was enough for a 1-0 victory over Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium.

Waring, on loan from Stoke, tapped home from close range after 56 minutes to seal the Tykes' third successive league win in Johnson's first game as boss.

Gavin Hoyte had the best chance for Gillingham but the hosts succumb to their first defeat in eight games - and a first under the recently-appointed Justin Edinburgh.

Barnsley appoint ex-Oldham boss Lee Johnson as manager

Barnsley have announced the appointment of former Oldham boss Lee Johnson as their new manager.

Johnson, 33, currently the third youngest Football League manager, was unveiled at Oakwell on Wednesday afternoon after signing a contract until 2018. He becomes Barnsley's sixth permanent boss in less than six years.

The League One club, who sacked former boss Danny Wilson 13 days ago, have agreed an undisclosed compensation package with Oldham as Johnson had signed an extended deal in January 2014 to...

Josh Scowen struck the only goal of the game as 10-man Barnsley battled for a 1-0 victory at Scunthorpe.

He pounced on a bad defensive error by the home side to curl a right-foot shot past goalkeeper Luke Daniels and into the bottom corner in the 51st minute.

It halted a run of seven successive away defeats for the Tykes and ensured back-to-back wins for caretaker boss Mark Burton.

They achieved it despite having centre-back Jean Yves-M'Voto sent off in the 55th minute for a second bookable offence.
