Second-half goals from Lewin Nyatanga and Marley Watkins steered Barnsley into round two of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in a comfortable 2-1 win at Scunthorpe.

Centre-back Nyatanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a looping effort over goalkeeper Luke Daniels from a right-wing set piece knocked high into the box.

Watkins then struck after 76 minutes, with an excellent close range finish after some good skills in the box to create himself the opening.

In between Sam Winnall also went close...

Keith Hill savoured the taste of victory versus former club Barnsley as his Rochdale side cruised to a 3-0 win at Spotland.

The Dale chief, sacked by the Tykes in December 2012, saw his side pick up three comfortable points against a Barnsley side who looked a shadow of the team which ran Barclays Premier League giants Everton so close in the Capital One Cup just three days earlier.

Calvin Andrew fired the home side ahead in the seventh minute with a fierce drive from the edge of the area. Tykes goalkeeper...

Romelu Lukaku got Everton back into the game late on.

Everton were almost shocked by League One side Barnsley in the Capital One Cup but rallied to win 5-3 in extra-time as they started John Stones against his former club, despite the defender having handed in a transfer request.

Stones, who began his career at Barnsley, has been the subject of three bids from Chelsea and told Everton earlier this week that he wants to leave during the transfer window.

However, he could do nothing about Barnsley's attack on Wednesday night as Sam Winnall found acres...

Marley Watkins was denied an injury-time winner for the hosts by the woodwork as Barnsley and Bradford fought out a goalless draw at Oakwell.

The hosts were inches away from scoring when a long Marc Roberts throw found its way to Watkins, who saw his near-post effort smash against a post.

Bradford started well and pressed Barnsley which led to four corners in a row and they came close to scoring through an acrobatic effort by Rory McArdle, which Adam Davies managed to tip over the bar.

Birthday boy Lewin Nyatanga's late goal saw Barnsley beat Millwall 3-2 at The Den and record back-to-back victories in Sky Bet League One.

Fred Onyedinma's first senior goals for the Lions looked to have rescued a point for the hosts, who had battled back from trailing 2-1 after goals from Barnsley's Sam Winnall and summer signing Alfie Mawson.

But defender Nyatanga, celebrating his 27th birthday, popped up deep into injury time to nod home Conor Hourihane's delivery and snatch the win for the visitors.
