Barcelona optimistic of signing striker Paco Alcacer from Valencia

ESPN FC's Sid Lowe explains why Barcelona are interested in Paco Alcacer.
ESPN FC's Janusz Michallik provides his predicted top five for the upcoming La Liga season.

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez hopes a deal for Valencia striker Paco Alcacer can be done in the coming days.

Alcacer, 22, has emerged as Barcelona's top target, and Catalan newspaper Sport reported that the player has agreed terms.

Robert would not reveal how close a deal was to being completed, but added: "The market is open until Aug. 31.

"We're very interested in Paco. We're working on it, but we can't say more at the moment."

Robert said it will be "Alcacer or no one" but added:...

Paco Alcacer is attempting to push through a move to Barcelona from Valencia.

Paco Alcacer has asked Valencia to allow him to join Barcelona before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, according to multiple reports in Spain.

Valencia-based newspaper Superdeporte is among the outlets to report that the striker has personally asked club president Layhoon Chan to facilitate a move to the La Liga champions.

Barca manager Luis Enrique and sporting director Robert Fernandez have both admitted throughout the summer that the club are in the market for another...

Lionel Messi's Argentina retirement must be respected - Xavi

ESPN's Diego Monroig speaks with Argentina's Lionel Messi about his future, following his side's loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final.

Xavi Hernandez says his former Barcelona colleague Lionel Messi's decision to quit international football with Argentina must be respected.

Messi, 29, announced his retirement from the national team after he missed a penalty during a shootout defeat to Chile in last month's Copa America Centenario final, in what was a third consecutive loss in a major final for La Albiceleste.

The announcement has shocked world and Argentine football, with Argentina legend Diego Maradona and national president...

Ex-Barcelona president: Fans must oppose Neymar tax settlement

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta says that a deal cut with the Spanish tax authorities over the signing of Neymar in 2013 should not be allowed as it stains the club's image while "saving the behinds" of current leaders.

Barca have announced that they have reached agreement with Spain's tax authority, Hacienda, to pay €15 million in owed taxes and a €5.5m fine, while admitting the club was at fault in the complex transfer which brought Neymar to the Camp Nou. The deal also sees...

Gerard Pique lauded by Spanish media after winning goal

Previous critics of Gerard Pique were changing their tune after the Barcelona centre-back's late headed winner in La Roja's Euro 2016 opening Group D game against the Czech Republic on Monday.

Barcelona born Pique has been regularly jeered by his own country's fans over the last two years, due to his perceived anti-Real Madrid and pro-Catalan independence stances, with further barracking heard during their 0-1 tournament warm up defeat by Georgia earlier this month.

But his 87th minute header brought...
