Netherlands call up AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen for first time

Vincent Janssen will bring his 19 goals this season to the Netherlands national team this month.

AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen received his first call-up from the Netherlands on Friday in a 25-man squad to face France and England in friendlies this month.

Janssen has an Eredivisie-leading 19 goals this season, the same as PSV Eindhoven captain Luuk de Jong, who also was named in the squad.

FC Utrecht defender Timo Letschert was the second new name in coach Danny Blind's squad for the match against France at Amsterdam Arena on March 25, and England four days later at Wembley Stadium.

Ron Vlaar agrees AZ move following Aston Villa exit

Ron Vlaar is set to return to AZ on a contract until the end of the season.

AZ Alkmaar have announced an agreement to sign former Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar on a free transfer.

Netherlands international Vlaar, 30, left Villa in the summer after turning down a new contract but he has been without a club since after having to undergo a knee operation in July.

Ron Vlaar is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa.

LIVERPOOL -- Everton boss Roberto Martinez has refused to rule out a move for defender Ron Vlaar if he can prove his fitness.

Netherlands international Vlaar, 30, is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season but is recovering from knee surgery.

Vlaar is training with his former club AZ, in Alkmaar, as he bids to regain full fitness, and hopes to be ready to resume playing before the end of December.

Philadelphia Union hire Earnie Stewart as sporting director

Former U.S. national team veteran Earnie Stewart will take over in January as sporting director for the Philadelphia Union, the club announced on Monday.

Stewart, who is currently the director of football affairs at Dutch Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar, will oversee and guide all Union technical and football-related decisions, "working closely with the Union first team, USL team and youth academy," the club said.
