Ale Moreno delves into how Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami will fare in their 2020 MLS openers.

The Portland Timbers have acquired Colombia international winger Yimmi Chara as a Designated Player from Brazil's Atletico Mineiro, the club announced on Thursday.

"Yimmi is a player we have followed closely for nearly 10 years and having the resources made available to bring him to Portland is tremendous for everyone in the club," Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said in a team statement.

Brazil recall for in-form Fred would be bizarre for long-term World Cup plans

Copa Libertadores pits Brazil vs. Argentina in intriguing last-16 ties

Robinho and Atletico Mineiro are fancied to beat Racing but the Copa Lib is known for its unpredictability.

On Wednesday the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores really gets serious: three games, five former champions and two big clashes between clubs from Brazil and Argentina. It's perhaps surprising that all of this is coming so soon, in the round of 16 rather than in the quarterfinals. Come the end of next week, some major challengers will have left the competition.

The day kicks off with one of those Argentina-Brazil confrontations. In Buenos Aires, Racing play host to Atletico Mineiro, the 2013...

Former Arsenal and Brazil midfielder Gilberto Silva announces retirement

Gilberto Silva's impact at Arsenal proved something of a catalyst for his Brazilians players.
Gilberto Silva played for sides including Brazil, Arsenal and Atletico Mineiro.

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva has confirmed his retirement.

Gilberto, 39, had been without a club since leaving Atletico Mineiro in 2013.

He told a news conference: "As of today, I have ended my career as an athlete. It's a difficult decision.

"Worldwide, we do not ask to be born. When we are born, we do not want to die. I've heard a phrase that says footballers die twice. I disagree. I think the football player dies once, and makes a transition from the field to a new stage. For me,...
