Colombian match postponed after team bus attack leaves three injured

A Colombian league match between Atletico Junior and Deportivo Pasto on Saturday was postponed after the visitors' team bus was attacked on its way to the ground.

Two members of backroom staff and on player were hurt, a league statement said.

The match, due to have been played in Barranquilla, was called off "because of the attack suffered by the visitors' bus 14 kilometres from the stadium," the statement added.

It said: "We inform you that the match between Junior and Pasto is suspended."

Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe are the reigning Copa Sudamericana champions.

Three countries dominate this year's Copa Sudamericana, South America's Europa League equivalent.

Over the next two week, the quarterfinalists will be defined. Put together, 11 of the last 16 come from Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.

In the case of the first two countries, this is hardly a surprise. Three slots in the last 16 are reserved for Argentine teams, and four slots are reserved for Brazilians. All the clubs from these countries have done so far is beat one of their compatriots.

Copa Sudamericana's opening round highlighted by Santiago vs. Libertad

Matias Mier will be hoping to fire the Santiago Wanderers past Libertad in the Copa Sudamericana.

Europe plays its two continental competitions simultaneously; the Champions League and the Europa League are both well into the qualifying rounds, and will come to a climax at the end of the season in a little over nine months' time.

South America does it differently. The first half of the year is set aside for the main event, the Copa Libertadores, with the second string competition, the Copa Sudamericana, kicking off this week and ending in early December.
