Roma relying on Champions League qualification to help cut gap with Juve

ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti assesses Serie A clubs that will represent Italy in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League.

The final stages of Champions League qualifying have been something of a graveyard for Italian teams in recent years. Since the introduction of the current system in 2009, just two Serie A clubs -- Fiorentina that year and AC Milan in 2013 -- have made it past the final playoff round into the group stages. Lazio, Napoli, Udinese (twice) and Sampdoria have all fallen at the final hurdle.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all interested in Roma defender Kosta Manolas, the player's agent has said.

Manolas, 25, has been linked with a move to City this summer as Pep Guardiola looks to add to his defensive options.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Tempo, Ioannis Evangelopoulos refused to comment on whether the Greece international would stay in Serie A, but confirmed Manolas is in demand.

Juventus will begin the defence of their Serie A title with a home game against Fiorentina, with that fixture the pick of the opening day games in the 2016-17 season schedule.

Torino sign forward Adem Ljajic and midfielder Iago Falque from Roma

Adem Ljajic scored three goals for Inter last season while on loan.

Torino have signed forward Adem Ljajic from Roma for €8.5 million while also adding midfielder Iago Falque on loan.

The Serie A clubs both announced the moves on Monday.

Serbia international Ljajic, 24, will play under Serbian coach Sinisa Mihajlovic after scoring three goals while on loan at Inter last season.
