Transfer Talk: Arsenal, City keen on Martinez?

Arsenal and Manchester City could make a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez, according to Bild.

Spain international Martinez played a key role in Bayern's Treble-winning season under Jupp Heynckes last season, but the German tabloid reports that he is unhappy that new boss Pep Guardiola has used him at centre-back and as a substitute as well as in his favoured holding midfield role, and Bild claims he told agent Margarita Garay: "I had not envisaged it like that."

Whether he will end up in the Premier League is another question entirely, but the paper suggests both City and Arsenal would be keen as they are seeking a holding midfielder.

Arsenal are also rumoured to be looking at Bayer Leverkusen captain Lars Bender for that role, but the 25-year-old has told Bild he is under contract until 2019, adding: "I am happy here at Leverkusen and feel great. I don't need to change that right away. Moreover, my season wasn't that brilliant, so I don't feel I need to make the move to a huge club now."

Old guard could depart the Bridge

Speculation persists that John Terry and Ashley Cole could be on their way out of Chelsea as their contracts approach their expiry dates. The Guardian says the club has gone quiet and Cole could be on his way, with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco all interested, although he could be tempted by an MLS switch.

The Daily Express also believes Cole is off, and says Liverpool and New York Red Bulls are potential options. The paper adds: "Chelsea have already earmarked Seville's Spanish international star Alberto Moreno, 21, as Cole's replacement this summer, with Southampton's Luke Shaw considered too expensive. Talks on a £15 million move have already begun."

The Sun, meanwhile, focuses on Terry, saying the club's offer of a new deal is "well short of what the former England centre-back can earn abroad" and that the centre-back "is ready to consider offers from elsewhere in Europe." It suggests Galatasaray as a potential destination.

The Sun adds that Frank Lampard may yet agree a new deal.

Milner to follow in Barry's footsteps

The Daily Mirror says Everton are lining up an ambitious move for James Milner, who has a year remaining on his Manchester City deal and is apparently seeking reassurances over first-team football.

"Discreet enquiries" have been made apparently, though they don't seem overly discreet at this stage, and Milner could be tempted by the chance to follow Gareth Barry to Goodison Park after his former England colleague's impressive season under Roberto Martinez.

Tottenham are also said to be interested, but Milner doesn't play to leave the north-west of England, the paper reckons.

Not so fast, Nani

Louis van Gaal, presumably the next manager at Manchester United, called for Nani's move to Juventus to be blocked, according to the Mirror, because the Dutchman sees the Portuguese winger, who just signed a new deal with United last summer, as a part of his plans.

However, another winger might be on his way of Old Trafford. Wilfried Zaha, signed by Sir Alex Ferguson and ignored by David Moyes, could be on his way back to Crystal Palace, according to the Daily Mail. The paper is feeling speculative, though, taking a picture of Zaha among Palace fans on Monday as a sign that a deal may be in the offing.
