Cristian Benavente bagged a brace for Charleroi in their 3-1 win over Royal Antwerp.

A football player was injured by a smoke bomb thrown by rival fans during Sporting Charleroi's 3-1 win at Royal Antwerp in the Belgian League on Sunday.

Cristian Benavente dropped to the ground after being struck on the shoulder by an extinguished smoke bomb as he celebrated scoring his second goal, which had put Charleroi 2-1 up in the 28th minute.

The 23-year-old Peru midfielder had run over to the away fans near the goal.

Royal Antwerp are mourning the death of 17-year-old Joel Lobanzo.

Royal Antwerp teenager Joel Lobanzo has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a training session on Tuesday, the Belgian club have said.

Lobanzo, 17, collapsed while training with the under-19s on Tuesday and was taken to hospital, where he died during the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

Jelle van Damme completes exit from LA Galaxy and joins Royal Antwerp

Rookie Jonathan Lewis and veteran David Villa netted stunning goals to give visiting NYCFC a 2-0 victory over the LA Galaxy.

Jelle van Damme completed his exit from the LA Galaxy on Friday, sealing a return to his native Belgium with Royal Antwerp.

Van Damme, 33, had informed the MLS club that he wanted to return to his native Belgium for personal reasons and to be closer to his children. 

The Galaxy will receive $235,000 from Antwerp for Van Damme, who joined LA on a free transfer ahead of the 2016 season and made 46 appearances for the club during his time there.

Jelle van Damme is set to leave the LA Galaxy to return to Belgium for personal reasons, club president Chris Klein has confirmed.

Belgian news outlet HLN and the Los Angeles Times both reported on Wednesday that the 33-year-old was on the verge of signing a two-year contract with Royal Antwerp.

Klein told "Soccer Weekly" on ESPNLA 710 that the defender wanted to be with his two children and suggested the situation had affected his play this season.
