Atletico Madrid dropped two points in extraordinary fashion after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to Alaves in a 1-1 draw having only gone in front two minutes earlier.
Coach Diego Simeone had seen Atletico's principal La Liga title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid win their opening games and it seemed they had finally made the breakthrough when debutant Kevin Gameiro, who had wasted earlier chances, converted from the spot after a penalty was controversially awarded for a foul on Fernando Torres.
Manchester City midfielder Manu Garcia has joined newly promoted La Liga club Alaves on a season-long loan.
Garcia, 18, made his first competitive start for City in the FA Cup in February and then made his Premier League debut the following month, but he will now seek to secure more regular football with Alaves.
The club said he would initially join up with their B team in the fourth tier but he is set to then be given opportunities with Mauricio Pellegrino's first-team squad.
Atletico Madrid defender Theo Hernandez has signed a new contract until 2021 and sealed a season-long loan move to Alaves.
Hernandez, 18, came through the ranks at Atletico and was reported to have been interesting both Barcelona and Manchester City.
The Frenchman will now be loaned to Alaves for a season in order to gain first-team experience.
Alaves have signed midfielder Nenad Krsticic on a two-year contract in preparation for their return to LaLiga.
The Serbia international was released by Sampdoria this summer after spending eight years at the club, which included a loan spell at Bologna last season.
Born in Belgrade, Krsticic spent his early career at OFK Beograd before making his move to Serie A as a teenager with Samp in 2008.
