Greek Cup canceled by government after violence in semifinal

ATHENS, Greece -- Greece's government has canceled the Greek Cup a day after a semifinal was stopped because of fan violence.

The sports ministry announced the decision on Thursday following the violence in the northern city of Thessaloniki, where fans of local club PAOK threw flares onto the pitch and clashed with riot police on the field.

The game was stopped in the 90th minute as Olympiakos led 2-1.

The other semifinal featured AEK Athens and Atromitos, and the final was scheduled for April 2...

Manchester City loan Bruno Zuculini to AEK Athens

Bruno Zuculini will join AEK Athens on loan this spring.

Greek club AEK Athens have signed Manchester City midfielder Bruno Zuculini on loan for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old Argentinian joined City in 2014 but has yet to appear in a competitive match for his parent club.

He has previously played in Spain on loan to Valencia and Cordoba before returning to England for a spell with Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Swansea City have not made an approach for AEK Athens manager Gus Poyet as speculation gathers that Marcelo Bielsa is the preferred replacement for Garry Monk.

The South Wales Evening Post and Wales Online have reported that Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has begun interviewing candidates to replace Monk, who was dismissed last week after winning just one of his last 13 games in charge

AEK Athens hire former Sunderland manager Gus Poyet

Sunderland sacked Poyet in March.

Former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has agreed to become the new manager of Greek side AEK Athens.

Poyet was sacked by the Black Cats in March and was linked with the vacant post at Aston Villa.

But AEK, who sit third in the Super League under interim head coach Stelios Manolas, have agreed terms with the 47-year-old.

A statement on their website, under the banner "The Gus Poyet era at AEK FC begins," read: "AEK FC announces the agreement with the Uruguayan manager Gustavo Poyet until the summer 2016....

West Ham to face FC Astra in Europa League third qualifying round

West Ham will face FC Astra Giurgiu or Romania in the Europa League third qualifying round after surviving penalties in Malta on Thursday.

The Premier League side played with 10 men for over an hour against Birkirkara after James Tomkins was sent off, and will resume their campaign at home next Thursday.
