Melbourne Victory continued their surge toward the A-League finals, surviving a late scare from bottom-of-the-table Adelaide United to claim a 2-1 victory.

Victory's two-goal lead was halved in the 90th minute when Adelaide's Tarek Elrich pounced on some loose defending by Jason Geria. The Reds continued to press their case but ran out of time to claim an equaliser, with Victory climbing to within eight points of leaders Sydney FC.

Against the club they lost the 2008 Champions League final to, Adelaide struggled from early on in front of just more than 5,000 fans.

Gamba showed their tactical nous and created plenty of problems for United as they switched their formations in defence in attack.
