Ajaccio to remain in Ligue 2 following successful appeal

Ajaccio will remain in Ligue 2 after successfully appealing against a decision to relegate them on financial grounds.

The club were demoted last month by French football's financial governing body the DNCG along with Corsican rivals Bastia, who had just been relegated from Ligue 1.

Both clubs had the right to appeal, with Ajaccio confident of success after their accounts were merely ruled "incomplete" ahead of a vote to rubber-stamp funding from local authorities.

Radamel Falcao's goal helps Monaco advance in Coupe de France

A goal from Radamel Falcao, centre, helped Monaco get past Ajaccio 2-1.

Radamel Falcao scored his seventh goal in the past five games as Monaco beat second-division AC Ajaccio 2-1 to reach the fourth round of the Coupe de France on Friday.

The Colombia striker made a sharp run to the near post to turn in an excellent cross from 18-year-old French winger Kylian Mbappe in the 19th minute.

The 30-year-old Falcao has netted 16 times in all competitions this season, continuing his strong return to form following a career-threatening knee injury.

Benjamin Corgnet's extra-time goal kept Thursday's game from going to penalties.

St Etienne booked their place in the last 16 of the Coupe de France on Thursday night with a dramatic extra-time win over Ligue 2 Ajaccio.

Substitute Benjamin Corgnet struck the winner in the last minute of the added period when he volleyed home from a Nolan Roux header in a crowded box.

Jean-Christophe Bahebeck had put the hosts in front in the 10th minute but Rayan Frikeche forced the extra period with an 86th minute equaliser.

Toulouse, Lorient, Lille and Nice register Coupe de la Ligue wins

Toulouse's French Comorian goalkeeper Ali Ahamada celebrates after his side beat Auxerre on penalties in the Coupe de la Ligue.

Toulouse's miserable season took a turn for the better on Wednesday night as they reached the fourth round of the Coupe de la Ligue thanks to a penalty shootout victory against Ligue 2 side Auxerre.

Le Tefece were without a win since their opening-day Ligue 1 triumph against St Etienne but Dominique Arribage's side equalised three times at the Stadium Municipal to cancel out Auxerre goals from Samed Kilic, Sonhy Sefil and Gaetan Courtet.

AC Ajaccio defender Joris Sainati gets 16-month ban for double punch

Joris Sainati, in action for Istres, holds off Dijon midfielder Eric Bautheac.

AC Ajaccio's Joris Sainati has been hit with a massive 16-month suspension for punching two players during a Ligue 2 match last month.

Sainati, 26, became involved in a scuffle at the end of Ajaccio's home game against Tours on Aug. 28, during which his side had a 1-0 lead overturned in the final 10 minutes.

The defender player struck 18-year-old Tours goalkeeper Bingourou Kamara with a vicious blow from behind before landing another clean hit on 21-year-old midfielder Haris Belkebla.
