Enigma Mayambela back at Chippa United

South African Premier Soccer League side Chippa United have completed the signing of Mark Mayambela, one of the most talked-about players in the domestic league, as they continue to rebuild for next season.

Mayambela rejoined the club on a three-year deal from Ajax Cape Town, where he had seen his career rekindled last season, which follows hot on the heels of the capture of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo on Tuesday.

Mayambela, who played for Chippa in 2015, saw his career enter a downward spiral after he was booted out of SuperSport United in April 2016, just months after arriving, for what then-coach Stuart Baxter termed a lack of professionalism.

But the midfielder put that behind him to complete a fine season at Ajax -- the best of his career -- in which he was, at times, dazzling and a genuine match-winner.

Despite this, he made it clear he wanted to leave the team at the end of the campaign and has had his wish granted, rejoining Chippa on Wednesday in a move that was widely expected.

"Chippa United is a home to Mark Mayambela and when there was an opportunity to bring him back to the club we did not hesitate," club owner Chippa Mpengesi said in a statement.

"We are delighted to have him back in Port Elizabeth to finish what he started. Chippa United will give him a platform to fulfill the potential he showed in his early years in the PSL.

"The club has grown since Mark left and we have different objectives now. We have no doubt that he will add value to the growth of the brand, on and off the field," he added.

Mayambela has also played for Bloemfontein Celtic and Orlando Pirates, where he made just two league starts in three seasons but became a cult hero among the fans for his skill on the ball.
