CSL giants Shanghai Shenhua part ways with Gregorio Manzano

Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua have announced that they will not be renewing the contract of Gregorio Manzano next season.

The former Malaga, Atletico Madrid and Mallorca tactician joined the club at the start of the year and took them to fourth place in the league, their best showing since 2010 to earn a spot in the AFC Champions League.

Despite a successful season, doubts were cast earlier this week when Manzano returned to Spain with no clue whether he would still be at the club next season.

The club took to social media to thank Manzano for his contributions before making known the differences between Shenhua and the 60-year-old manager.

"Based on considerations of the club's future strategic development, the need to achieve goals set for the new season, as well as the differences both sides have regarding culture and football," the statement read.

"The Greenland Shenhua FC and Mr Manzano have reached an agreement through good negotiations that he will not be taking the position as the club's manager next season."

Manzano is the second high-profile manager to be leave the CSL this week, following Shanghai SIPG's decision to replace former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson with Andre-Villas Boas.
