Former AC Milan boss Clarence Seedorf named Shenzhen FC boss

Former Netherlands star Clarence Seedorf has been appointed head coach of Chinese second-tier club Shenzhen FC.

Seedorf, 40, takes on his first managerial role since his brief spell in charge of AC Milan in 2014.

He will replace former China international Tang Yaodong, 54, with the club currently eighth in the 16-team China League One.

Shenzhen confirmed his appointment in a statement on their official website on Thursday.

It read: "Due to the club's failure to meet expectations in the first half of the season, Shenzhen FC has determined to make adjustments to its coaching staff.

"Effective July 7, the club is hiring Mr Clarence Seedorf as the head coach of Shenzhen FC, replacing Mr Tang Yaodong. We are sincerely grateful for the contributions that Mr Tang Yaodong and other members of the coaching staff have made to the club's progress and development.

"Mr Seedorf is a famous Dutch legend, enjoying a glorious career playing for clubs including AFC Ajax, Real Madrid C.F., Inter Milan and AC Milan. He won four UEFA Champions League titles as a key player, as well as many other league and cup titles.

"Mr Seedorf was a meritorious player during his 10-year tenure at AC Milan from 2002 to 2012, and he once managed the team after retirement. As a key midfielder for the Dutch national team, Mr Seedorf participated in three European Championship tournaments in 1996, 2000 and 2004, as well as the 1998 World Cup.

"We believe Mr Seedorf, with his rich experience in international competitions and advanced methods in football, will lead Shenzhen FC into a new milestone.

"We believe the hiring of Mr Seedorf and his coaching staff will definitely help elevate the overall image of football in Shenzhen as well as the entire country, attracting more global attention to China and to Shenzhen."
