Chile defender Gonzalo Jara vows not to repeat finger 'mistake'

Chilean defender Gonzalo Jara has admitted his incident with Edinson Cavani during the Copa America was a mistake and vowed it will not happen again.

Jara, 29, was handed a two-match ban by South America's governing body following the Copa America quarterfinal against Uruguay.

The defender came up behind Uruguay attacker Cavani and pushed his finger against his opponent's backside. Cavani reacted, raised his hands towards Jara's head, only to see the Chilean collapse to the pitch. Cavani was sent off by the referee.

Jara's club career at Mainz came under scrutiny, with sporting executive Christian Heidel saying that the club does not tolerate such behaviour.

"He knows that if an offer comes in, he can go," Heidel said.

But Jara has so far not left the Bundesliga club, and six weeks after the incident has now broken the silence.

"My reaction was not right," Jara told reporters in Mainz on Thursday. "It was a mistake and won't happen again."

The defender, however, added that Cavani has to take a share of the blame.

"Everyone saw what I did. But I won't repeat the insults against me before," Jara said.

Jara added that he remains "an important player" for the Copa winners, and noted that when the pair meet again in November during the World Cup qualifers "it might be a good time to talk."
